Zone 7 delegates,

Again thank you for your effort in getting gun clubs to submit applications for the shoot. Congratulations to Western Wings in Roberts, ID. They have been awarded the 2010 Zone 7 Sporting Clays Championship tournament. Even though one person did not vote, it would not have made any difference in the outcome.

I hope that the gun clubs that were not awarded the shoot will continue to submit for future consideration for the Zone Championship. We want to continue to help and support our Zone 7 clubs in any way we can.

If there are any questions regarding the vote or the process, please call or e-mail me.

Respectfully,
Dan Mitchell

Zone 7 Delegates,

Attached are the applications from the clubs who have submitted for the 2010 Zone sporting clays championships.  They are: Ben Avery, Camanche Hills, Coyote Springs, Kiowa Creek, Raahauge Shooter Enterprises, Western Wings and the Whittington Center.

I would appreciate it if you would send your votes to me no later than the 5th of June.  I will post the results on my web page and will send you the results after the votes have been counted.

Thank you for your efforts in getting other clubs to submit.  I believe this is the most number of clubs that have ever submitted bids for the Zone shoot.

Any questions please call me at 503-930-5450 or e-mail me at mitchellsclaytargets@yahoo.com.

Zone 7 Delegates,

As of this date, only one club submitted a bid for the 2010 Zone 7 Championship - Western Wings in Roberts, ID. I left messages with Tim Miles at Coyote Springs to ask him whether he is still interested in hosting the shoot, but he has not yet responded to me. If you know of any other clubs who are interested in hosting the shoot, please have the club manager contact me ASAP for any help or information they may need. The bid sheets are located on my web site:

http://www.mitchellsclaytargetsports.com/pdf/2010_Zone_7_shoot_app.pdf.

The next Sporting Clays magazine will also have a note asking Zone 7 clubs to submit applications for the 2010 shoot (it was supposed have been in the February issue, but did not make it in until the May issue). Hopefully, we can generate more interest from the clubs. The current deadline for bid submission is April 30. Please provide feedback on whether you think this is still a realistic deadline or whether you would like to push it out. If your choice is to push out the date, please propose a date that you think is reasonable and when you would like to vote on the selection of host club for the 2010 Zone Championship.

I was hoping to be able to announce the location of the 2010 Zone Championship at Desert Lake, but given the circumstances, that may not be possible. However, we should be able to tell the shooters which clubs have submitted and announce the date when the selection will be made.

I heard the NRA Whittington Center in New Mexico expressed an interest in submitting a bid for an upcoming zone shoot. Maybe the New Mexico State Delegate, Mr. Lewis,  can enlighten us on any information regarding their interest.

Respectfully,
Dan Mitchell

Thank you for your votes and input on the selection of the host club for the 2009 Zone Championship.

As promised, here are the results of the vote. Congratulations to Jared Smith and Desert Lake Shooting Club.

I will be making up a new form within the next 60 days for clubs to use to bid for the 2010 shoot.  I would like to hold the vote prior to the 2009 zone shoot, so we can tell folks where the 2010 Championship will be held at the 2009 zone shoot.

Sincerely,
Dan Mitchell

Letter #3 to the 2008-2009 NSCA State Delegates (06/03/08)

As I promised in earlier emails, enclosed is the list of clubs that have submitted proposals to host the 2009 and 2010 Zone 7 shoot.

I am very surprised and disappointed that only a few clubs responded with proposals. I sent two letters requesting you, the state delegates talk to your clubs about hosting the zone and even advertised in Sporting Clays magazine stating any club interested in hosting the zone shoot get back to me.

The low response from clubs was one reason I sent out the letter discussing splitting the zone. I felt this would allow more clubs to make a bid for the zone shoot. Clubs that don’t have the facilities to handle 300+ shooters, but could handle 150-250 shooters could now bid for the zone shoot.

Some of you noted the proposal form for the zone shoot did not require clubs to specify the pricing of the events. I feel it is unfair to the club to set a price in these economic times. The cost to put on a shoot is impossible to predict with the rising cost of fuel, targets, labor, food, etc. Also, with the rising cost of living, it is difficult to predict how many shooters will attend.

Here are the clubs who have made a proposal to host the zone.

2009

Desert Lakes Shooting Club. Boulder City, NV. (Most of you have either been there or read about the club). They can handle up to 350 shooters in the main and 240 for FITASC. You can read more about the club at: http://www.desertlakeshooting.com

Coyote Springs Sporting Clays. Tuscon, AZ. (Host of the 2008 Zone 7 Championship). (Tim decided to bid again when he heard no other clubs had submitted a proposal to make sure we had a place to shoot the zone). Their website is: http://www.coyotespringsclays.com

Sage Hills Clay Sports. Reno, NV. (Host of the Winter Championships). They can handle 400+ shooters in the main event. Sage Hill is central to within the zone.

2010

Sage Hills and Coyote Springs submitted bids for 2010 as well.

Salem Clay Targets. Salem, Oregon. (Many of you have been to the club for either the Oregon State shoot or Ducks Unlimited). They can handle up to 324 shooters in the main and 176 FITASC. You can read more about the club at: http://www.salemclays.com/

These are the only clubs who expressed an interest in hosting the zone to-date. If you prefer not to vote for a club for 2010, but would rather wait until next year, please check the appropriate box.

Also, if you know of clubs interested in hosting the 2010 Zone Shoot, please have them submit a bid by May1, 2009 so we can vote on the host of the 2010 Zone Shoot prior to the 2009 shoot.

Letter #2 to the 2008-2009 NSCA State Delegates (5/24/08)

I would like to get your opinion and the opinions of the shooters you represent on an important issue for Zone 7.  I also want to assure you that I am not pushing for the specific changes raised for discussion and will not make any proposals without significant discussion and a majority vote of the delegates.  I’m bringing them up because the rising cost of living is negatively affecting our sport and I believe we need to discuss changes that could better serve our shooters and our clubs.

The issue I would like to kick off a discussion on is whether or not we should consider creating a new zone from a portion of the states that are currently in Zone 7. This issue has already been raised on the shotgun forums and I have discussed this topic with many of you earlier because of the large geographic area Zone 7 contains. With the rising cost of living and especially fuel costs, it has become too expensive for many shooters to travel long distances for the Zone 7 championship. Even when a Zone 7 championship is held in a geographically central location, it still requires significant travel expense for many of our shooters.  I believe that our economic climate is the primary reason the 2008 Zone 7 championship had lower participation levels than in years past. A smaller zone could also allow smaller clubs to bid on the zone championship because many clubs could handle a shoot of 200 shooters, but not 400+. A related topic for discussion is if Zone 7 were to be split up, how would you propose to do it? Once again, I would like to remind you this is for discussion only.  Even if the majority of the zone membership believes that creating a new zone is appropriate, we would still have to get the approval of the NSCA before we could make any changes.

I would also like you to talk to the gun club owners to determine the main issues that are keeping them from bidding to host the Zone 7 championship.  Only a few clubs have submitted a proposal so far for the 2009 championship and I would like to see more club interest, especially since I would like to have you vote not only for the 2009 host club, but also the host club for 2010. I would like to get this feedback to drive further discussions on how we can increase club interest in hosting the Zone 7 championship.  Range owners interested in hosting the zone shoot should turn in their proposals by June 1, 2008 for the 2009 Zone 7 Championship.

Once again, I would like to remind everyone these issues are for discussion purposes only. I know that creating a new zone will be a controversial topic and I’m sure that I will receive a lot of email with arguments both for and against. I promise to share these emails with you and I hope you will also share the views of your constituents with me so that we can make informed decisions to better serve our sporting clays community.  Please also bring up any ideas that could help shooters and clubs, even if it seems controversial. Change is usually controversial, but we need to make changes to reflect our economic situation if our sport is to stay alive.

Respectfully,
Dan Mitchell

Letter #1 to the 2008-2009 NSCA State Delegates
(12/29/07)

Thank you for electing me as your Zone 7 Coordinator. Using my experience of 42 years in the shotgun shooting world, my goal is to bring you new ideas to help our clubs and to build excitement into our sport. With the cost of everything rising at a faster rate than we are used to, adjustments for our recreational dollar will need to be made.

I will have a web page designated for NSCA delegates on my web site at www.mitchellsclaytargetsports.com. I am planning to post an informative letter to the state delegates on roughly a bi-monthly basis. I am sending you a copy of this letter via e-mail and will also be posting it to my site. I welcome input or questions from the Zone 7 members on any subject at any time. I will reply to you as soon as I have a response or answer to your question. My site will also have all Zone 7 state shoot dates along with the location of the zone shoot. This and additional shoot information and scores can be found on www.shotgunscores.us. Adam Pinto’s web site will also contain information and shoot dates.

Speaking of the zone shoot, you will find an application to host a Zone 7 shoot on Mitchell’s website after the first of the year. I would like gun clubs to submit the application to me. This information will be sent to the state delegates on a timely basis so that sites for future zone shoots can be named at the current year’s zone shoot.

On the application you will notice a request for 2009 or 2010. If a club does not get selected in 2009 they will be asked if they would like to bid for the 2010 zone shoot. You as the state delegates should confer with your members before placing your vote for the location of the Zone 7 shoot. I would like your vote on whether or not you approve of a 2-year program that would allow the zone shoot site to be selected 2 years in advance as soon as possible as I plan to post the application to my web page no later than the 20th of January. Please email me at mitchellsclaytargets@yahoo.com or call me at (503) 930-5450 and let me know your vote.

I was very disappointed to discover that only 18% of the national state membership voted for their state delegates. I realize delegates cannot do anything about shooter complaints about club prices, target setting or location; however, you can keep your shooters updated and stay upbeat about the game. It is important to keep the shooters abreast of new rules and rule changes being discussed and the reasons for them. You can also include the members in the decision of the location of future state and zone shoots and let them know once the decision has been made. State delegates can offer to help organize shoot dates with the state association, or work with the clubs directly when no state association exists. Hopefully, you can assist with knowledge and information when problems arise and otherwise provide help. I believe this is an area that I can be of assistance by using the knowledge I gained through running or owning ranges and working in the industry for over 40 years. Finally, I would also like you to talk with your state NSCA members to find out either why they choose to stay in the game or why they are leaving.

Speaking of votes, 22 of 28 state delegates voted for the Zone 7 Coordinator position. If you went to the NSCA web page, I won by one vote. If all delegates voted it is possible that things would have turned out differently. Why would you want to be a state delegate and not vote? I ask all state delegates to please vote on rules or any other items that come up for a vote.

Many of you probably wonder why I ran for this position after keeping out of politics for the past few years. Sometimes I wonder myself, but I hope in the next few years I can work with you on new ideas to ensure the future of our sport. I also hope to pass on some of the knowledge I gained through my experience to help clubs with business plans to help keep their doors open. Even though I have been criticized for some things I have done, I am still in the game after 42 years, while most of the critics are gone. Please call me if I can help in any way.

Respectfully,
Dan Mitchell
