61 shooters turned out for the Fred Huffman Memorial Sporting Clays Tournament. The weather for the sub-gauge events was beautiful, perhaps the last true day of summer to be enjoyed by shooters in the Willamette Valley. Master-class shooter Ken Sides bested the field taking top honors in the 20, 28 and 410 gauge events.
As the weekend wore on, the sky clouded over and issued forth a reminder that fall was settling in and that winter was coming. Dodging rain showers as best they could, Saturday's scores reflected the malaise brought on by chill winds. Jerry Martin led the charge in D class, but Ellen Deleganes upped the ante by five targets on Sunday to win D-class and collect two important punches.
Nick Ockfen posted a very strong 93 on Sunday to produce a AA-class-winning score of 174, besting Dave Farley's tally by three targets. Other strong finishers were Ben Guymon in E-class with a 135; Bob Larimore in B-class with a 163; Chris Greenwood in A-class with a 170 using Fiocchi's new steel target load.
Taking top honors in C-class was Will Huffman, for whose father the event was named and dedicated. On Saturday afternoon, Will, along with several members of the club who knew Fred Huffman, spoke their rememberances of the shooter whose secret name was "teddy bear." A retired Oregon State Trooper, Huffman was a fixture at the gun club, practicing his sporting clays game as much as he could.
The event featured a steak lunch on Saturday, prepared in part by Terry Murphy, charcoal-griller extraordinaire. Fun games were enjoyed by several shooters after lunch, including the long-ball trap shot, won by Lisa Adams and the tower of terror won by Todd Anderson. |
